Municipal Alcohol Licenses

Overview

The Town of Cedarburg currently has seven establishments licensed to serve alcohol. License periods run July 1st through June 30th on an annual basis. The Town licensed establishments are:

"Class A" Intoxicating Liquor and Class "A" Fermented Malt Beverage

"Class B" Intoxicating Liquor and Class "B" Fermented Malt Beverage

Types of Alcohol Beverage Licenses

"Class A" Intoxicating Liquor License:

  • Allows for retail sale of intoxicating liquor (including wine) for consumption off the premises. Examples: liquor stores or grocery stores with full liquor sales sections. (Sec. 125.51(2), Wis. Stats.)

Class "A" Fermented Malt Beverage License: 

  • Allows for retail sale of fermented malt beverages (beer) for consumption off the premises. Examples: grocery or convenience stores. (Sec. 125.25, Wis. Stats.)

"Class B" Intoxicating Liquor License:

  • Allows for retail sale of intoxicating liquor (including wine) for consumption on the premises, and wine in original sealed containers for consumption off the premises. State law also allows carry out of a single, opened (resealed) bottle of wine if sold with a meal at either a "Class B" or "Class C" licensed premises. Examples: taverns and restaurants with alcohol beverage service. (Secs. 125.51(3), 125.51(3r), Wis. Stats.)

"Class B" Winery License

  • Allows for retail sale of wine to be consumed by the glass or in open containers on the premises and also authorizes the sale of wine in the original package or container to be consumed off the premises. Does not also authorize the sale of fermented malt beverages or any intoxicating liquor other than wine. An applicant cannot be issued a "Class B" winery license by the Town unless the winery has first been issued a permit by the Wisconsin Department of Revenue.

Class "B" Fermented Malt Beverage License:

  • Allows for retail sale of fermented malt beverages (beer) for consumption on or off the premises. Examples: restaurants, "beer bars." (Sec. 125.26, Wis. Stats.)

Temporary Beer and Wine License:

  • Temporary Wine License: Allows for retail sale of wine at a picnic, meeting, or similar gathering of limited duration. Such licenses may be issued only to "bona fide clubs and chambers of commerce, to county or local fair associations or agricultural societies, to churches, lodges or societies that have been in existence for at least 6 months... and to posts of veterans' organizations."  Limit of two licenses issued per organization in a 12 month period. (Sec. 125.51(3m) Wis. Stats.)
  • Temporary Beer License: Same provisions as above. No limit on the the number of licenses issued in a 12 month period.

Applicants may apply for either of these temporary licenses at Town Hall during normal business hours. License applications are considered for approval by the Town Board at their monthly meeting held the first Wednesday of the month. Agendas for Town Board meetings are finalized and posted the preceding Friday. Please plan accordingly as Town staff can not expedite the approval process if you miss the deadline to submit your application.

Operator (Bartender's) License:

  • Allows individual to serve alcoholic beverages in the Town. Cost is $32 to apply. License period runs July 1 through June 30 annually. New applications must include Responsible Beverage Server training course certificate or license from other municipality no older than two years.

License applications approved by the Town Board at their monthly meeting held the first Wednesday of the month. Agendas for Town Board meetings are finalized and posted the preceding Friday. Please plan accordingly as Town staff can not expedite the approval process if you miss the deadline to submit your application.
